I painted this while in a watercolor workshop. It was a study of trees which I pretty much painted from memory and was a lesson on negative painting. You can see how I painted around the tree shapes with a darker color to make them appear lighter in the foreground. Painting around a subject is called negative painting . . . the artist paints these negative or background shapes around the object rather than concentrating on painting the objects or positive shapes.
