I used to paint a lot of these florals in watercolor. I called them "blob" flowers because I didn't draw them first, but just put a "blob" of the lightest color in the flowers of one kind (always repeating each flower several times for harmony.)  While it was still damp, I dropped in the next darker or mid-value, and finally the last or darkest one. Since wet, the colors would run and fuse together creating the softness you see in the flowers.  Often I would finish by accenting them using a very fine ink pen.
